Living in the Midwest, we are accustomed to the sudden changes that the weather can bring. Today, we have tornado warnings in effect until early this evening, last night we had straight line wind whip through the area, uprooting trees, and the skies have that threatening look, like just about anything could happen. It reminds me of what happened a couple of years ago, when an F3 tornado ripped through an event I had in production, tossing a 120 x 60' tent into the lake, along with the lighting, staging, chivari chairs and everything else! With less than 48 hours left to put everything back together, we had our work cut out for us! We made it happen, and you can see the result in our Featured Weddings gallery under Laura & Christopher's Aug. 18, 2007 wedding.

All of this brings me to the point of my blog. If you are planning on having any part of your wedding outside (ceremony, cocktail hour, etc. ) , you absolutely must have an indoor plan in case of bad weather. Its imperative that you have things in place, so that if need be, you can easily transition from outside to inside. Its not ideal and its not at all what you've envisioned, BUT you've also not envisioned yourself stuck in a downpour in your duchess satin wedding gown either.

When do you make the call to move things inside? That can be tricky! I think you have to evaluate the weather forecast and make the call based on that information, as well as your comfort level. You also have to take into consideration, how long it will take to relocate everything. Its a call no one wants to have to make on their wedding day, but, why chance having everything ruined that you've paid for by wind, rain or hail? Not to mention the comfort and safety of everyone in attendance.

I never ever recommend having your entire reception outside, ever. Your guest tables will be so beautifully appointed with linens, china and floral, why risk that (and again, your guests) to the elements? Even if you have a beautiful sunny day, no one will want to sit in the hot sun while having their meal. Having a tent will ensure that everyone will be out of the weather, they will be shaded from the sun, or protected from the rain. Most musicians, bands and DJ's also require some type of shelter overhead, to again, protect their equipment and instruments.

Having a contingency plan just makes good planning sense. If you need to implement it, you can rest easy, knowing you have made plans to make the transition. It will help avoid chaos, frustration and panic on what should be, the happiest day of you life.

Wedding Day Survival Tips

Now that we are firmly entrenched in the wedding season, its a bit harder to blog on a regular basis! So, I'm going to try and share with you some things that I consider to be indispensable once the wedding day arrives. The first item that comes to mind, and that I end up using at almost every wedding is Hollywood Fashion Tape! This stuff is a lifesaver! Hollywood Fashion Tape is double-stick, hypo-allergenic tape. Its completely comfortable on skin and is safe to use on all fabrics. The original comes in 3 inch strips, and they now have the 'Red Carpet Assortment' which includes five different shapes that will fix any potential wardrobe malfunction. AND - if none of these shapes fits your situation, just use scissors and cut your own!

Okay, here are the various ways I've used this tape to solve a wedding day snafu:

- securing dress necklines (strapless, plunging, etc.) so you don't reveal too much
- keep dress from gaping open under arms, near arm pit
- fix a hem that has fallen out (groomsmen pants, mother of the bride dress, etc.)
- secure spaghetti straps that keep falling off the shoulder
- anchor shoe straps that keep slipping
- keep bra and slip straps undercover and in place
- close shirt if a button is lost
- keep elbow length and opera length bridal gloves in place
- keep thigh high hosiery from slipping
- keep sashes on flower girl & bridesmaid dresses from slipping out of place

I've even used it to re-tack down an aisle runner that had come loose! I'm sure I'm forgetting some other uses, but I never leave to do a wedding without it!! We stock it in our boutique, Girly Girl Gifts & Accessories - come by and get a few samples to try for yourself. There is nothing more unattractive than the bride tugging on her strapless dress all day and night, slap some Hollywood Fashion Tape on and that dress won't move at all! Trust me.

Association of Bridal Consultants Meeting, IN Chapter, Chesterton, IN

I spoke at an Association of Bridal Consultants state chapter meeting this past Sunday, which was held at the beautiful Sand Creek Country Club, in Chesterton, IN. It was so good to see some of my old friends (Kay, Gloria and Dena!) as well as meet a few new! Christina Page of Christina's Creative Planning, LLC, did a great job of arranging the entire day - thanks Christina! I was introduced to an idea that I think is just great, CineMagic, Personal Movie Posters. In a nutshell, its a movie style poster, featuring the bride and groom! You can choose your own 'title' or pick from a few suggestions. They look like the real deal, and would be an amazing keepsake after the wedding is over. You can use one of your own images, (with your photographers release) perhaps from your engagement session, or, they can do the photography for you. I hope to be offering this to my clients soon!

Guest Favor Idea

One of our Celebrated Events brides, Casey Korecki, along with her Mom, has been in town this week to work on her July '09 wedding. While we are busy putting all the pieces together, I just had to share her idea for their guest favor. She, and her fiance Tom, are planning on naming their guest tables after cities/states they have visited together, and the favor will be something from that place! For instance, they both attended Notre Dame, so of course, they spent four years in South Bend. They are planning on having something from the South Bend Chocolate Company on the 'South Bend' table. Maybe maple syrup on the 'Vermont' table, cheese on the 'Wisconsin' table, etc., etc. You get the idea! I can't wait to see what they come up with! We are planning on packaging the favors in some consistent way, to be compatible with the tablescape we are creating. We aren't sure yet, but it might be something as simple as a ribbon. We're still in the brainstorming phase, so we'll see what we come up with, stay tuned!

The Pond at Wood Meadow - Zedan/Bossung Wedding, August 23, '08

Here are a few images from the wedding of Carrie Zedan and Kyle Bossung. We will have many more images to share from this event on our Featured Weddings pages, so check back soon!
This wedding took place at the groom's parent's home - the ceremony was on the edge of a pond that was tucked away in a wooded area, and the reception took place in a grassy pasture. A horse drawn wagon took guests from their cars to the ceremony, where guests enjoyed a cool glass of lemonade while waiting for the big moment to arrive. Immediately following, guests were led to the cocktail area, where guests could enjoy a game of cornhole, a favorite of the bride and groom. Dinner and dancing followed inside the tent!

Christine Denison and Brian Diss, March 21, 2009

These are early images from the Denison/Diss wedding we did on 3/21/09. I'll have more to show later, but thought I'd post these as a little preview. The client wanted to create a feeling of drama and sophistication, which I think we were able to achieve through lighting, fabric treatments and outstanding elevated floral pieces. The reception took place at the Hilton Garden Inn with cocktails beginning in their pre-function area, then progressing into the ballroom for dinner and dancing. More to come!!

This is a view of the fabric treatment that was over the dance floor, looking straight up. Floral, fabric treatment and lighting were done by my associates, the amazing team at MichaelAngelos!

Franks Favorite Things - Drake Hotel - March 10, 2009

On March 10, 2009, the Illinois chapter of the Association of Bridal Consultants held a very special meeting at the Drake Hotel. My longtime colleague, Frank Andonoplas presented 'Franks Favorite Things.' It was a beautiful showcase of his undeniable talent for decor and design! Every table (14 in all) was beautifully appointed, with coordinating china, glassware, flatware, linens, menu cards and gorgeous centerpieces. I didn't get images of all of the tables, but what I did get is shown below. I came away inspired and with more than a few new ideas!

This table was all done in whites and crystals. I loved the napkin treatment - a 'chandelier' crystal!

The linen on the table below was made from 100% recycled materials!

I loved the spring/whimsical linen on this table, as well as the petals filling the centerpiece to hide the floral stems of this biedermeier styled piece.

Cute twist on the traditional pocket napkin fold!

Cool manzanita branches formed the base of this centerpiece.

Oh my goodness this centerpiece was phenomenal in person! One of my former brides, Nicole (Jones) Brochu who works in sports marketing on campus, has informed me that the stadium 'bowl' is under renovation. The 'bowl' is the inside portion of the stadium, the seating, the tunnels leading to the field, etc. Also, both locker rooms (home and away) are being renovated as well. So even if you do have a hook up to allow you access, its a torn up mess. All work has to be finished by the time football season rolls around, so perhaps, you fall brides may have a chance. Not to worry though, you have so many outstanding venues around campus to photograph your Notre Dame wedding, seriously, where do I begin? The Grotto, the Administration Building (Golden Dome), the reflecting pool in front of 'Touchdown Jesus', the lake, and the list goes on and on! Just thought I'd pass this info along!

Guest Welcome Bags

I'm often asked what should go into a guest welcome bag - I say, it depends on the time of year, and the location the wedding is taking place in. My staples that go in every bag, regardless, are, a welcome note or letter, an agenda of the weekend's activities and a guide of local places to eat and things to do. I also always include something to drink - usually water, something sweet and something savory/salty, hopefully, locally made. BUT, depending on the time of year, I customize a bit. If its July, and the church has no air conditioning, I might include those personal, battery operated, hand held fans. You can get them customized with your names and wedding date if you like! If its the dead of winter and the temps are low, I've used HotHands hand warmers. Guests simply open the packet and the tiny hand warmers go to work! Perfect for coat pockets! Its all about welcoming your guests and thinking of their comfort. Deliver the bags to the hotel your guests will be staying in the day before you expect any arrivals. Most hotels are happy to hand each guest one of your bags upon check in. Tired from traveling, your guests will appreciate you for thinking of them!

Notre Dame Basilica - Save the Date 2010!!

For most people, March 2, 2009 will be an ordinary, back to work Monday. But for those brides, grooms and families who are hoping to secure a date for their 2010 wedding at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, it is so much more! Its been called things like 'Basilica Monday' and 'Basilica Lottery Day', but according to Amy Huber, who is the Wedding and Baptism Coordinator at the Basilica, it doesn't have a name, it is simply the day the calendar opens up for wedding reservations for 2010. Amy will begin taking calls at 8:00 am, EST and stop at 4:30 pm, EST. When dialing in, you will not get put on hold, just keep dialing until you get through. If you hear a busy signal, hang up and try again, Amy is on the line with another caller. Can you plan a strategy to try and up your chances of getting the day and time you are hoping for? I think you can. These suggestions may not help you get through to Amy faster, but they will help you to be prepared to make a decision with confidence, once you do get through. The last thing you want to have happen, is to get through, but not be able to accept an available date. You'll have to hang up, then go through the whole process all over again.

1.) First and foremost, have five to ten, yes I said ten, dates and times chosen that would be acceptable choices. Discuss this in advance with all involved parties until you can all agree on a list of acceptable dates/times.
2.) Have multiple folks calling in on your behalf.
3.) If you are having multiple folks calling in, make SURE they have your list of acceptable dates and times, and that they are authorized to make a decision on your behalf.
4.) This may seem like it goes without saying, but remember that the calls are being taken on Eastern Standard Time - if you are on the west coast, that means calls will begin being taken at 5:00 am and end at 1:30 pm your time.
5.) Be patient, just keep dialing.

Good Luck Everybody!! We can't wait to hear from you once you secure your 2010 date!!

Baby Shower Fun!

When I found out that one of my assistant's was expecting, I immediately asked if I could help with the baby shower - and Jen, pictured here with me (her = red boa, me = blue boa) said sure!
And that was that.....until...
...she and her husband Troy came in with the ultrasound...they were going to have twins!! We had been using an old school Polaroid Instamatic Camera and Polaroid film to create the images that we would put into one of our Addesso albums. (check these out at www.addessoalbums.com) Guests would then sign around their image, and at the end of the night, we would give the book to the bride and groom to enjoy! It has always been a hit, and we love doing it! Then, this summer, we found out that the film was being discontinued.....NUTS! We invested in a small (about the size of a boom box) digital photo printer, and continued doing the photo guest books, just with different technology. It worked, but there is just something fun watching your image slowly appear on the Polaroid film, and something cool about the retro feel of the Instamatic Camera. Then eureka! I just found out that due to overwhelming demand, the Polaroid film will be available in 2010! I think what we will do, is give our clients the choice, to have the images taken in either the digital or Polaroid format. It will be interesting to see what people will prefer. As for me, well, those who know me already know my choice. OutKast says it best 'Shake It Like A Polaroid Picture!'

To Theme or Not To Theme

The current issue of Wedding Day magazine is out and features fairy tale and theme weddings. I was asked to write an article about planning a themed wedding - so if you are contemplating a theme for your big day, be sure to check this issue out! I wanted to share a few other thoughts that didn't make it into the article. I would shy away from asking the guests to dress for the wedding to fit your theme. Trust me, Grandma is not going to know what to wear to your Lord of the Rings themed wedding, nor will she, and probably others think its a really cool idea. You don't want to require guests to possibly have to go out and purchase something to wear, that they would ordinarily never buy, nor wear, or ever wear again! If you really really want guests to comply to a specified dress code, make it an easy one - for instance - requesting everyone wear off white to your beach wedding. Chances are, they will be able to wear the clothes again, or best case scenario, already have them in their closet!

Sliders at the Palais Royale

I had a tasting at the Palais today with my 'winter bride' Kate (which is kinda funny since Kate is from Texas and now lives in California). Kate's wedding is on February 28, 2009, at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, with the reception to follow at the Palais Royale. Among the hor d eourve options we tried were mini burgers, or, as we like to call them in the midwest, sliders. These were served on a bun that I can only describe as being sort of like phyllo dough - and they were really yummy! I would never have thought to use this type of thin, layered flakey crust on a mini burger, but I am telling you, it works! Guests will also be welcomed in from the wintery cold with hot Irish Coffee's - how perfect after a wedding at Notre Dame! Can't wait!

Calling All Celebrated Events Brides!!

I just got an email from a former bride, Sarah (Beddingfield) McIsaac asking to be a friend on her Facebook page. Well, OF COURSE - only problem was, I didn't have a profile on Facebook.....! My web guy has been pestering me to do this (sorry Brian), and honestly, I really wanted to see the pics Sarah had posted on her profile, so I did it! Now, after seeing pics of her and her groom, Brian, (geez has it really been over 2 years since the wedding?) I'm having separation anxiety over them, all over again! Truth be told....I have separation anxiety after all my weddings! After spending a year or more planning with my clients, I get a bit emotionally invested, knowing full well, once the wedding is over, most of them will leave South Bend to begin their lives. Its part of the deal - I get it...but it doesnt' stop me from thinking of them, and wondering how they are. So Sarah, thank you dollface, for contacting me!! I DO (no pun intended) think about you, miss you, wish you well. If any of my other former brides happen to come upon this blog entry, give me a shout out - I would love to hear how you are doing. I think of you often, I really do.

You can fan the Celebrated Events Facebook page.

Headbands are the new tiara?

While attending the Chicago National Bridal Market for Spring '09, I noticed a definite trend in headpieces emerging. The headband! Although tiara's are still very strong (tiara's are timeless, no?), everywhere I looked, there were headbands and more headbands! Styles ranged from very simple to the very elaborate, with embellishments of crystals, rhinestone, pearl, shell, silk flowers and even feathers. A few favorites were the Octavia, the Alvina and the Miu by Tigerlilly (www.tigerlillyjewelry.com) and the Makenzie, the Sophia and the Vera by Sara Gabriel (www.saragabriel.com). Both lines are available at my boutique Girly Girl. I'll let you know when the new inventory I ordered arrives! Stay tuned!

Cute Placecard Idea

I wanted to share this idea with all of you! Especially those of you who are in the teaching profession. One of my brides, Maren Palmer-Campbell (now Maren Novotny), who is an elementary school teacher, had her students write her wedding guests names on her place cards! Some of the names were written teeny tiny, some super big, some up hill, some down, but they all had charm for miles! Maren's students were excited about her upcoming wedding, and this was a darling way to 'include' all of them on her special day. I've posted an image of them here - doesn't the idea just make you smile?!

Michiana's Premier Wedding Expo

Michiana's Premier Wedding Expo will take place on Sunday, October 26, 2008 from noon until 5:00 pm at the Hilton Garden Inn, in their beautiful new Fleur de Lis Ballroom. I don't want to give anything away, but come expecting the unexpected! My boutique, Girly Girl will be exhibiting, where we will be debuting our gift registry! We will also be featuring new styles from our popular line, Classy Bride, with new, cute catch phrases as 'Hitched', 'Happily Ever After' and ' Just Married' done in crystals on their tanks and tees. I love the light in this photo, soft and magical. The ceremony setting was The Church of Loretto, on the Campus of Saint Mary's College, the bride's alma mater. The tented reception was held on the lawn at Tippicanoe Place, with the fabulous mansion serving as a drop back.

Notice Alexa's blue shoes! As you can see, the date and the ceremony location (Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame campus)was the only thing these two weddings had in common. The top three images are from the Sandrea/Fahy wedding, which featured a timeless glamour, both elegant and chic. The color palette consisted of warm gold and champagnes, combined with celadon and touches of silver. The ceiling of the Marriott Grand Ballroom was draped in soft fabric that met in the center of the room, and from which crystals cascaded down at varying heights. Crystals also cascaded from the centerpieces that were elevated, and studded the center of the calla lilly's that were used in everything from the bride's bouquet, to the design on the wedding cake.

In contrast, the Reilly/Frey wedding was awash in bold colors, set against deep indigo blue. The reception took place in the Great Hall, at the Century Center, where alternating elevated and low centerpieces featured floral in hot pinks, tangerines, lime and buttercup yellow. The food stations each had printed menu's that were framed in fresh lemon leaves accented with a burst of floral color. Each guest napkin was topped with a gerbera daisy, in alternating hot pink or tangerine, giving the table a touch of whimsy. A 'conversation' area was created with overstuffed furniture accented with hot pink pillows, surrounded by lush foliage, that was washed in hot pick light.

While both ceremonies were at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart (11:00 am, 3:00 pm), and both were on the same day, each bride clearly expressed her vision for her perfect day - we were happy to help make it happen!

Recognized by Event Solutions Magazine!

Check this out!
